Autonomous Surgery
In large-scale combat operations or mass casualty events, the number of available surgeons can be the difference between life and death. To address this critical shortfall, the DARPA Surgical Competition (DSC) seeks to accelerate the development of autonomous robotic systems for trauma surgery.
The Surgical Competition calls on teams from across the world to create robotic systems capable of assisting and, eventually, independently performing complex surgical procedures in unpredictable trauma environments. The goal is to assist human surgeons, creating a force multiplier that provides "infinite" surgical capacity on demand.
Through a series of demanding trials, this competition will push the state-of-the-art in robotics, artificial intelligence, and human-machine collaboration. Participants will compete for a total of $3.5 million in prizes by demonstrating capabilities in areas such as:
- Surgical collaboration: Working seamlessly alongside a human surgeon on complex procedures.
- Surgical independence: Autonomously performing critical surgical tasks.
- Advanced learning: Rapidly learning new tasks from a small number of examples.
The innovations spurred by the competition will not only ensure our warfighters have access to the best possible medical care on the battlefield but will also have a profound impact on civilian healthcare—from improving access to care in remote areas to providing a robust response capability for national emergencies.
The competition is on. Join us in defining the future of surgery.
