Non-linear optical materials are critical to a number of defense and commercial applications, such as LiDAR and communications. Yet, the performance of these materials is constrained by a lack of sequence, orientation, and composition controls.
The Atomically Precise Molecules (APM) program seeks to overcome these limitations by developing synthesis approaches that deliver programmable precision polymers (PPPs), which control the sequence, orientation, and composition of molecules with high precision. In doing so, APM aims to unlock a previously inaccessible material synthesis capability, enabling a near-infinite palette of programmable materials.
Structured as a two-phase, 36-month effort, APM will first focus on developing new chemistries before employing them to synthesize revolutionary materials and incorporate them into functional devices. While sub-nanosecond electro-optic modulators will serve as the initial demonstration, unlocking this level of precision synthesis could ultimately introduce entirely new material functions, driving next-generation capabilities for the Department of War and industry alike.
