DARPA to Host “Sync with STO” Event

Strategic Technology Office announces two-day gathering in Arlington, Virginia, to engage with technical community and explore innovative solutions to national security challenges

Jun 23, 2017

DARPA’s Strategic Technology Office (STO) is hosting a “Sync with STO” event on August 2 - 3, 2017, designed to familiarize attendees with STO’s mission, problem spaces, program managers (PMs), and technology interests. The event aims to facilitate technical discussion between STO PMs and attendees that explore innovative and revolutionary ideas for addressing national security challenges.

Today a special notice was posted on FedBizOpps providing full details and a registration link for the event. The agendas for the event are identical on both days.

“We look forward to engaging with a wide spectrum of technology companies, university researchers, and other technologists who can provide unique insights and advanced commercial technologies that could be applied in new ways to achieve STO’s vision,” said Tom Burns, STO director. “We are especially interested in hearing from small, innovative, tech-savvy companies or research teams that have never worked with us before. And we’re encouraging attendance by lead solutions people, not just business development representatives.”

STO is developing composable “effects webs” that dominate engagements across the conflict spectrum, from highly contested force-on-force conflicts to ambiguous and complex “gray zone” conflicts, such as posturing and fighting in complex ambiguous environments, where the enemy is not as easily identifiable and civilians may be intermingled with combatants. By seamlessly orchestrating sensors and Command and Control (C2) nodes, and by delivering effects via a distributed “mosaic” network of manned and unmanned platforms, STO seeks to turn complexity into a new and powerful asymmetric weapon.

STO works to achieve its vision by developing key enabling technologies, systems, and composable systems-of-systems in the following five areas:

  1. Intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (including sensors and seekers);
  2. Battle management, command and control;
  3. Communications and networking; and
  4. Electronic warfare

The event will consist of two workshop sessions designed to let DARPA PMs and attendees collaboratively assess military challenges and synthesize potential technology solutions. Topics for discussion will be geared towards identifying means to find creative and effective solutions to strategic problems in the following areas: (1) strategic problems for the U.S. military; (2) unconventional global security problems; and (3) challenges associated with design, fielding and operation of complex, adaptive capabilities.
