Public Affairs

Public Affairs

DARPA Public Affairs (PA) helps DARPA programs and the Agency as a whole achieve their goals through proactive, targeted communications. We help DARPA build and maintain strong relationships with diverse stakeholder audiences by providing clear, compelling and accurate information about the Agency’s research, its relevance to national security and its potential for revolutionary change.

DARPA PA fulfills these duties by providing expert communications guidance and analysis to DARPA leadership and program managers, and ensuring that all information that DARPA publicly releases is consistent with Agency and Defense Department policy. With decades of experience in journalism, commercial public relations and government public affairs, our staff specializes in helping the Agency communicate effectively about the mission-critical technology, policy and business issues that matter to DARPA and its stakeholders.

Additionally, DARPA PA writes all web features on the DARPA News page and is the sole point of contact for the media about the Agency, its programs and personnel. If you are a member of the media, please email all inquiries to outreach@darpa.mil. Our For Media page and Media FAQ provide useful tips and insights for quickly and effectively incorporating information about DARPA into your stories.

For general questions about DARPA PA, please see our PA FAQ .

Office Leadership

Jared Adams, Chief of Communications
Jared Adams joined the DARPA Public Affairs Office in 2014, serving as the Agency’s press secretary for three years before becoming the chief of communications in July 2017. Prior to DARPA, Adams served in senior public affairs positions in the Washington, D.C. area with Harris, SAIC, and Raytheon. In addition to his in-house communications experience, Adams has provided public relations counsel to several high-profile organizations, including Booz Allen Hamilton, Dell, Microsoft, Verizon, U. S. Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center, Defense Threat Reduction Agency, and U.S. Northern Command.

Adams received a Bachelor of Science in rhetoric from Kansas State University where he was a four-time American Forensics Association finalist and national public speaking champion. He also holds a Master of Arts in communications with a concentration in political rhetoric and conflict from Northern Illinois University.

Selected DARPA Achievements

DARPA collaborated with industry on stealth technology.
DARPA’s Stealth Revolution
In the early days of DARPA’s work on stealth technology, Have Blue, a prototype of what would become the F-117A, first flew successfully in 1977. The success of the F-117A program marked the beginning of the stealth revolution, which has had enormous benefits for national security.
DARPA microelectronics gave rise to today's GPS devices.
Navigation in the Palm of Your Hand
Early GPS receivers were bulky, heavy devices. In 1983, DARPA set out to miniaturize them, leading to a much broader adoption of GPS capability.
First rough conceptual design of the ARPANET.
Paving the Way to the Modern Internet
ARPA research played a central role in launching the Information Revolution. The agency developed and furthered much of the conceptual basis for the ARPANET—prototypical communications network launched nearly half a century ago—and invented the digital protocols that gave birth to the Internet.
