Heimdall

Artist’s concept of how Heimdall might function, helping Sailors target oncoming maritime surface threats.

Summary

The Heimdall program looks to leverage advancements in machine learning to aid or automate targeting activities that are currently performed manually by a US Navy Sailor.

Accurately aiming at a potential target in the water from a moving ship is an extremely challenging task.

The software developed in Heimdall will automatically maintain gun system targeting in a dynamic environment, reducing Sailor workload and allowing them to focus on tactical decisions.

The software created by the Heimdall program will utilize existing computer and sensor hardware aboard the ship and require only software installation, which will shorten the speed of fielding.

Phase 1 of the program will be a six-month effort, beginning in the first quarter of 2025.
