Fundamental research office seeks to engage R&D community to expand pool of innovative proposals
May 4, 2021
DARPA’s Defense Sciences Office (DSO) will host a webinar for potential proposers June 23-24 to provide insight into key scientific and technical research areas the office plans to pursue in the coming year. DSO’s mission is to identify and create the next generation of scientific discovery by pursuing high-risk, high-payoff research initiatives across a broad spectrum of science and engineering disciplines and transforming these initiatives into disruptive technologies for U.S. national security.
Discover DSO Day (D3) aims to familiarize participants with DSO’s mission, promote understanding of an anticipated broad agency announcement (BAA) solicitation to be released in June prior to D3, and facilitate discussion between potential proposers and DARPA program managers.
Day 1 of the event will feature presentations from the DARPA director and the DSO director, technical panel discussions with program managers highlighting focus areas of interest, and informational briefings on doing business with DARPA. Day 2 is reserved for one-on-one sidebar discussions with those who were selected through a previous special notice.
“D3 provides a great opportunity for members of the broader military, government, academia, and industry R&D eco-system to hear from DSO’s program managers about the critical S&T areas we’re focused on to create breakthrough technologies and capabilities for national security,” said Valerie Browning, DSO office director. “We especially look forward to engaging with potential proposers who have never worked with DARPA or DoD in order to expand the pool of innovative proposals.”
Several DARPA program managers will share their ideas and interests as members of the following panels, taking audience questions as time permits:
- Foundations – Alternative Computing and Next-Generation AI
- Complex Social Systems – Undergoverned Spaces and Infinite Contests
- Anticipating Surprise – Resilient Systems, and Operations in Harsh Environments
- Limits – Sensing, Communication and Metrology
