Today’s critical Department of Defense (DOD) systems and platforms rely on advanced electronics to address national security objectives. To help tackle obstacles facing a half-century of electronics advancement, DARPA launched the Electronics Resurgence Initiative (ERI) – a five-year, upwards of $1.5 billion investment in the future of domestic electronic systems. In November, DARPA expanded ERI with the announcement of ERI Phase II, which seeks to further enmesh the technology needs and capabilities of the defense enterprise with the commercial and manufacturing realities of the electronics industry.

The Microsystems Technology Office is holding a Proposers Day meeting to provide information to potential proposers on the objectives of the new FOcal arrays for Curved Infrared Imagers (FOCII) program and to facilitate teaming. The goal of the program is to develop and demonstrate technologies for curving existing state-of-the-art, large-format, high-performance infrared focal plane arrays (FPAs) to a small radius of curvature (ROC) to maximize performance, as well as curve smaller format FPAs to an extreme ROC to enable the smallest form factors possible while maintaining exquisite performance.

MACH seeks to develop new materials and designs for cooling the hot leading edges of hypersonic vehicles traveling more than five times the speed of sound.

The Biological Technologies Office is holding a Proposers Day meeting and webcast to provide information to potential performers on the new ReSource program. The primary objective of ReSource is to provide the military with the ability to rapidly and efficiently up-convert military waste into valuable resources onsite and on demand. By the end of the program, developed platforms should be capable of resourcing on-demand products that could include the following: edible macronutrients; traditionally petroleum-derived products such as lubricants, adhesives, and tactical fibers; potable water; and other value-added molecules for an emergency ration (e.g., caffeine).

The goal of the ReSource program is to provide the military with an integrated system to convert plastics, and other energy-dense waste, into food and other strategic chemicals. Developed technologies should function in austere environments to extend long-term missions by engaging single-use wastes and scavenged materials as feedstock, consequently decreasing the logistic burdens and risks associated with delivery of supplies.
