Reliable wireless communications today requires careful allocation of specific portions of the electromagnetic spectrum to individual radio networks. While pre-allocating spectrum is effective in benign environments, radios remain vulnerable to inadvertent interference from other emitters and intentional jamming by adversaries.

Colonel Michael Fazen joined DARPA in 2018 as the special assistant to the director and U.S. Army operational liaison. Previously, he served as the U.S. Africa Command J65 Enterprise Service Manager in Stuttgart, Germany.

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Young Faculty Award (YFA) program aims to identify and engage rising stars in junior faculty positions in academia and equivalent positions at non-profit research institutions and expose them to Department of Defense (DoD) and National Security challenges and needs. In particular, this YFA will provide high-impact funding to elite researchers early in their careers to develop innovative new research directions in the context of enabling transformative DoD capabilities.

DARPA is seeking innovative ideas and disruptive technologies that provide the U.S. military significant capability improvement to dominate across all scales of conflict intensity. These span highly contested force-on-force conflicts to ambiguous, complex 'Gray Zone' conflicts. Technologies should support conflicts that may take place in a range of environments from austere, remote locations to dense megacities.
