The Agency also occasionally stands up temporary special projects offices focused on coordinating, developing and/or deploying advanced capabilities on an accelerated time scale. These efforts fall outside of DARPA’s typical program structure and leverage the Agency’s unique organization and skill sets to make rapid progress in technology areas that are critical to national security. DARPA currently operates one special projects office: the Aerospace Projects Office (APO).

The Adaptive Execution Office sponsors operational immersion events to assist DARPA program managers early in their tenure. “PM Boot Camp,” as it is known, is intended to build program managers’ confidence in reaching out to relevant Service partners. The events place program managers in a ride-along role during live military exercises or operations, providing a forum for discussion and networking that can build enduring relationships with DARPA customers.

DARPA has invested more than $200 million in support of President Obama's Brain Initiative since 2014. This Federal investment has accelerated the development of innovative neurotechnologies with the potential to improve human health and change the way people live, work, and play. On March 2, 2016, DARPA will host a small meeting of technology-minded investors, scientists, and entrepreneurs to showcase several current, cutting-edge neurotechnology efforts, consider future trajectories and potential applications, and encourage continued investment and eventual commercialization of some of these technologies. Special Assistant to the DARPA Director/Army Operational Liaison
Col. Joseph Angyal joined DARPA in 2016 as the special assistant to the director and U.S. Army operational liaison. Previously, he served as the deputy director of the U.S. European Command Joint Cyber Center in Stuttgart, Germany.
Special Assistant to the Director, U.S. Navy Operational Liaison
Captain Daniel Brunk joined DARPA as the U.S. Navy operational liaison in 2017. He previously served on the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations in the Operations and Plans Division as the Ocean Systems and Nuclear Matters branch head.
