The holiday season is bringing high-tech offerings for U.S. war veterans this year in the form of sophisticated bionic arms developed under the direction of DARPA. In a ceremony today at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) in Bethesda, Md., Justin Sanchez, Director of DARPA’s Biological Technologies Office, delivered the first two advanced “LUKE” arms from a new production line—shiny evidence that the fast-track DARPA research effort has completed its transition into a commercial enterprise. As part of that transition process, DARPA is collaborating with WRNMMC to make the advanced prostheses available to service members and veterans who are rehabilitating after suffering upper-limb loss.

DARPA’s Towed Airborne Lift of Naval Systems (TALONS) research effort recently demonstrated its prototype of a low-cost, elevated sensor mast aboard a commissioned U.S. Navy vessel for the first time. The crew of USS Zephyr, a 174-foot (53-meter) Cyclone-class patrol coastal ship, evaluated the technology demonstration system over three days near Naval Station Mayport, Florida.

DARPA has successfully completed its Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) Continuous Trail Unmanned Vessel (ACTUV) program and has officially transferred the technology demonstration vessel, christened Sea Hunter, to the Office of Naval Research (ONR). ONR will continue developing the revolutionary prototype vehicle—the first of what could ultimately become an entirely new class of ocean-going vessel able to traverse thousands of kilometers over open seas for months at a time, without a single crew member aboard—as the Medium Displacement Unmanned Surface Vehicle (MDUSV).

This Federal investment has accelerated the development of innovative neurotechnologies with the potential to improve human health and change the way people live, work, and play. On March 2, 2016, DARPA will host a small meeting of technology-minded investors, scientists, and entrepreneurs to showcase several current, cutting-edge neurotechnology efforts, consider future trajectories and potential applications, and encourage continued investment and eventual commercialization of some of these technologies. Division Chief: U.S. Navy & STRATCOM
Commander James “Sleestak” Reeve is the Division Chief for the U.S. Navy and STRATCOM in the Adaptive Execution Office. In this capacity, CDR Reeve works with DARPA and the Services to evaluate transition paths for DARPA technologies while identifying capability gaps related to specific technology/research and development objectives. He also manages and tracks DARPA technological efforts of interest to DoD users across the Naval (Air/Space/Cyber) and STRATCOM mission sets. As DARPA’s co-lead for the Technology Development Working Group, he works to ensure synergy between DARPA, U.S. Air Force, and U.S. Navy special access programs. Additionally, CDR Reeve manages DARPA's Service Chiefs Fellows Program.
