Dr. John S. Paschkewitz joined DARPA as a program manager in 2015. He is interested in new paradigms and foundational approaches for the design of complex systems and system-of-systems (SoS) architectures. Prior to joining DARPA, Dr. Paschkewitz was a research area manager at PARC (formerly Xerox PARC) where he worked on an exceptionally broad range of problems spanning hardware design, software development, materials science, manufacturing, and innovation management.

Lt. Col. Jimmy “Reverend” Jones joined DARPA in October 2016 as a program manager in the Strategic Technology Office. Prior to his arrival, he was the chief of the Advanced Countermeasures Branch in Air Force Special Programs at the Pentagon. Lt. Col. Jones is a U.S. Air Force test pilot with combat experience as a Wild Weasel flying suppression of enemy air defenses missions in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

DARPA occasionally stands up temporary special projects offices focused on coordinating, developing and/or deploying advanced capabilities on an accelerated time scale. These efforts fall outside of DARPA’s typical program structure and leverage the Agency’s unique organization and skill sets to make rapid progress in technology areas that are critical to national security. DARPA currently operates one special projects office: the Aerospace Projects Office (APO).

In collaboration with the Department of Defense’s Joint Improvised Explosive Device Defeat Organization (JIEDDO), DARPA initiated the Vehicle and Dismount Exploitation Radar (VADER) program to design and deploy a radar system for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) or small manned aircraft. Developed for DARPA by Northrop Grumman Electronic Systems, VADER provided synthetic aperture radar and ground moving-target indicator data to detect, localize, and track vehicles and dismounted troops.

Ionizing radiation can be a silent killer. While scientists have made some strides in preventing immediate death from exposure, there are currently few intervention technologies to protect against long-term morbidity and mortality. In light of the diverse, persistent and substantial threat posed by ionizing radiation, the Department of Defense seeks new ways to protect military and civilian personnel against the immediate and longer-term effects of acute exposure.
