Raman spectroscopy uses lasers to measure molecular vibrations to quickly and accurately identify unknown substances. Ultraviolet (UV) lasers have the optimal wavelength for Raman spectroscopy at stand-off distances, but the Defense Department’s (DoD) current UV-based tactical detection systems are large and expensive and have limited functionality. A new DARPA program seeks technology that may make UV-based detection equipment more readily available in the field.

Advanced commercially available technologies—such as additive manufacturing (3-D printing), small-scale chemical reactors for pharmaceuticals, and CRISPR gene-manipulation tools—have opened wide access to scientific exploration and discovery. In the hands of terrorists and rogue nation states, however, these capabilities could be misused to concoct chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and high-yield explosive (CBRNE) weapons of mass destruction (WMD) in small quantities and in form factors that are hard to detect.

The Defense Sciences Office is holding a Proposers Day meeting and webcast to provide information to potential proposers on the objectives of the SIGMA+ program’s Network and Analytics thrust area. SIGMA+ will develop a persistent, real-time, early detection system for the full spectrum of chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosives (CBRNE) WMD threats at the city-to-region scale. The Network and Analytics thrust will pursue developments for automated, large-scale intelligence and data analytics for the SIGMA+ system, further developments for the SIGMA network backbone that are expected to be required to perform full fusion of these data and methods, and interface and interoperability.

The Proposers Day will be held on March 7, 2018 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time at the Executive Conference Center (4075 Wilson Boulevard, Suite 300, Arlington, VA 22203).
