The security of communications and information for troops operating in tactical warfighting environments is limited. At the tactical edge end-to-end, connections on secure servers are typically unreliable, negatively impacting operations and coordination with coalition partners. Additionally, current infrastructure requirements for such secure connections can be large and cumbersome, limiting tactical deployment in fast-moving operations.

Potential proposers are highly encouraged to review the current I2O programs (http://www.darpa.mil/about-us/offices/i2o) and solicitations (http://www.darpa.mil/work-with-us/opportunities) to avoid proposing efforts that duplicate existing activities or that are responsive to other published I2O solicitations.

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is soliciting innovative proposals in the following technical areas: radio architectures and technology and network architectures and technology that maintain network reliability through periods of high channel degradation. Proposed research should investigate innovative approaches that enable revolutionary advances in science, devices, or systems. Specifically excluded is research that primarily results in evolutionary improvements to the existing state of practice.

The “Hyper-Dimensional Data Enabled Neural Networks” (HyDDENN) program seeks new data enabled neural network (NN) architectures to break the reliance on large MAC-based DNNs. HyDDENN will explore and develop innovative data representations with shallow NN architectures based on efficient, non-MAC, digital compute primitives to enable highly accurate and energy efficient AI for DoD edge systems.
