The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Strategic Technology Office (STO) is hosting a “Sync with STO” event on August 2 – 3, 2017. The purpose of the event is to (1) familiarize attendees with STO’s vision, problem spaces, program managers (PMs), and technology interests; and (2) facilitate technical discussions between STO PMs and attendees that explore innovative and impactful solution ideas for strategic national security challenges. The event is scheduled for August 2 – 3, 2017, at the DARPA Conference Center located at 675 N. Randolph St. Arlington, VA 22203.
The Advanced RF Mapping program seeks to provide radio frequency (RF) situational awareness using low-cost sensors distributed over the battlespace. The sensors include devices deployed for other purposes, such as tactical radios. The vision is that all RF devices in theater will support RF situational awareness when not performing their primary mission.
The Arctic region is poised for greater regional significance as polar ice retreats in coming decades. Ship traffic likely will increase during summer months, and commercial activity focused on the sea floor is expected to grow. The Arctic is largely isolated, vast, and environmentally extreme. Remote sensing may offer affordable advantages over traditional methods of monitoring the region—aircraft, satellites or manned ships and submarines—due to the great distances in the Arctic.

The Digital RF Battlespace Emulator (DRBE) program aims to create the world’s first, large-scale, virtual radio frequency (RF) environment for developing, training, and testing advanced RF systems, such as radar and electronic warfare (EW) systems. The target DRBE environment will enable numerous RF systems to interact with each other in a fully closed-loop RF arena, replicating dense, responsive, real-world RF environments.
Office Director
Dr. Timothy Grayson is the director of the Strategic Technology Office (STO). In this role, he leads the office in development of breakthrough technologies to enable warfighters to field, operate, and adapt distributed, joint, multi-domain combat capabilities at continuous speed. These technologies include sensing, communications, and electronic warfare technology and the supporting tools and decision aids needed to compose, integrate, and operate complex combat architectures.
