Decentralization

The ability to update underlying capabilities in large and massively complex systems inexpensively and quickly is crucial to avoid outdated and inferior electronics. The increasing complexity of our major military systems precludes rapid change so it is essential that we move towards a new model that allows for quick adoption of new and modern electronics.

DARPA is soliciting innovative proposals to develop, demonstrate, and apply emerging technologies developed under the Electronics Resurgence Initiative. Proposals should establish partnerships between defense transition partners and the academic and commercial sectors, leading to direct and revolutionary impacts on Department of Defense (DoD) or national security capabilities. Proposals that demonstrate an established path to impacting existing or emerging programs of record are strongly preferred.

DARPA is seeking revolutionary ideas that lead to rigorous and practical demonstrations of the feasibility and effectiveness of advances in machine social intelligence in a teaming context. ASIST envisions synthetic agents that observe their surroundings; build and maintain rich representations of the environment, team, and individuals; infer their teammates beliefs and goals (and other unobservable states); predict their actions and needs; and assist the team by planning interventions and executing them at appropriate times.
