DARPA published its Young Faculty Award (YFA) 2018 Research Announcement today, seeking proposals in 26 different topic areas—the largest number of YFA research areas ever solicited.

DARPA’s Tactical Technology Office is hosting a Proposers Day to provide information to potential applicants on the structure and objectives of the new Urban Reconnaissance through Supervised Autonomy (URSA) program. URSA aims to develop technology to enable autonomous systems operated and supervised by U.S. ground forces to detect hostile forces and establish positive identification of combatants before U.S. troops encounter them. The URSA program seeks to overcome the inherent complexity of the urban environment by combining new knowledge about human behaviors, autonomy algorithms, integrated sensors, multiple sensor modalities, and measurable human responses to discriminate the subtle differences between hostile individuals and noncombatants.

Although available program funds are typically fully allocated at the start of a program, opportunities sometimes arise 12 – 18 months after program kickoff, when phase 1 performance is being assessed. If you have ideas you think may be of interest to a program, this may be a good time to talk to the PM.

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is soliciting innovative proposals for the second phase of a two-phase program to design, develop, and manufacture low-cost, persistent maritime floats that sense and report relevant data from the physical and operational environment. The program, Ocean of Things, is a vital part of the Mosaic Warfare end-state vision. Proposed solutions should develop innovative approaches that enable revolutionary advances in science, devices, or systems and innovative approaches to apply existing technology not previously applied to the maritime domain. Specifically excluded is research that primarily results in evolutionary improvements to the existing state of practice.
