Admiral Swift served in the U.S. Navy for more than 40 years, rising from his commission through the Aviation Reserve Officer Candidate program to become a Navy light attack and strike fighter pilot and leading at all levels. He commanded aircraft carrier-based squadrons, a Carrier Air Wing, a Carrier Strike Group and the U.S. Seventh Fleet forward deployed to Ja-pan, finally completing his uniformed career as the 35th Commander of U.S. Pacific Fleet in 2018. During his years of service, he participated in combat Operations Praying Mantis, Southern Watch, Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom, and received a master’s degree from the Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Island.

Herbert J. “Hawk” Carlisle became president and chief executive officer of the National Defense Industrial Association (NDIA) on June 15, 2017. Gen. Carlisle came to NDIA after a 39-year career in the Air Force, from which he retired as a four-star general in March 2017.

DARPA’s Strategic Technology Office (STO) is hosting a “Sync with STO” event on August 2 - 3, 2017, designed to familiarize attendees with STO’s mission, problem spaces, program managers (PMs), and technology interests. The event aims to facilitate technical discussion between STO PMs and attendees that explore innovative and revolutionary ideas for addressing national security challenges.

DARPA’s Strategic Technology Office (STO) this week unveiled its updated approach to winning or deterring future conflicts during Sync with STO Day, held in Arlington, Virginia. At the event—which attracted about 300 innovators and entrepreneurs, more than half of whom had never worked with DARPA before—STO program managers outlined new areas of interest and held discussions with attendees to explore innovative technology solutions for strategic national security challenges.

Today, Commercial off-the-shelf (COTS), Government off-the-shelf (GOTS), and Free and open-source (FOSS) software support nearly all aspects of DoD, military, and commercial operations. Securing this diverse technology base requires highly skilled hackers who reason about the functionality of software and identify novel vulnerabilities, using a suite of tools and techniques that require extensive training. While effective, the process is largely manual and requires hundreds, if not thousands, of hours of effort for each vulnerability discovered.
