LTC Philip Root joined DARPA to serve as a TTO program manager in May 2017. His research interests include unmanned vehicles, collaborative autonomy, and machine learning algorithms. He is particularly interested in leveraging commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) technologies and the adaptability of U.S. warfighters to augment mission effectiveness.
Prior to joining DARPA, LTC Root served as the director of the Center for Innovation and Engineering at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. In this role, he coordinated the research and outreach of a team of professors spanning the electrical engineering, chemistry, physics, mathematics, computer science, environmental engineering, and mechanical engineering departments. He also held faculty positions in the academy’s civil and mechanical engineering department. Previously, he served in leadership roles at various U.S. Army Distributed Common Ground Stations, the NASA Astronaut Office, and Headquarters and Headquarters Company of the U.S. Army’s 52nd Aviation Regiment.
LTC Root earned a Doctor of Philosophy and a Master of Science, both in aeronautics and astronautics, at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He also holds a Bachelor of Science in aeronautical engineering from the U.S. Military Academy.
