Colonel Michael Fazen joined DARPA in 2018 as the special assistant to the director and U.S. Army operational liaison. Previously, he served as the U.S. Africa Command J65 Enterprise Service Manager in Stuttgart, Germany.
Commissioned in 1993 as an Artillery Officer, he has served in the 1st Infantry Division (The Big Red One), the 1st Armored Division, the 2nd Infantry Division, III Corps, the 106th Signal Brigade (NETCOM), and Headquarters, Department of the Army. He has served as a fire supporter (artillery forward observer) at the company, battalion, brigade, division, and corps levels, and commanded a Paladin (cannon) artillery battery. His overseas tours include Germany, Iraq, Korea, and Kosovo. COL Fazen changed career fields to Functional Area 53 (Information Systems Manager) in 2008 and subsequently served as the Chief Architect and Chief Technology Officer in the Department of the Army’s Office of Business Transformation, where he integrated the Army’s business processes architecture with the business systems architecture and served as the Army’s co-lead for its cloud migration program.
His awards and decorations include: the Defense Superior Service Medal; Legion of Merit; Bronze Star Medal; Defense Meritorious Service Medal; two awards of the Meritorious Service Medal; Joint Service Commendation Medal; four awards of the Army Commendation Medal; three awards of Army Achievement Medal; Iraqi Campaign Medal; Kosovo Campaign Medal; Korean Defense Service Medal; a variety of unit and campaign awards; NATO Defense Medal; and Basic Parachutist Badge.
COL Fazen completed a one-year Fellowship at Microsoft. He holds a Master of Science degree in Management Information Systems from Texas A&M University’s Mays Business School, with additional Master’s degrees from the National War College and Air University’s Air Command and Staff College. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Engineering from Texas A&M University.
