CDR Kyle Woerner

Tactical Technology Office (TTO)

Program Manager

Cmdr. Kyle Woerner joined DARPA in September 2018 as a program manager in the Tactical Technology Office. His interests include unmanned systems, offensive and defensive swarms, undersea influence, multi-domain teaming, and human-machine interactions.

Prior to joining DARPA, Woerner served as a project manager at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard with a focus on employment of expeditionary robotic systems payloads and submarine modernization. He previously served on the personal staff of the Chief of Naval Operations as a special assistant focusing on unmanned systems, cyber warfare, and Navy acquisitions. He additionally served in consecutive Flag Aide positions to the Deputy Commander and the Commander, U.S. Pacific Fleet. At sea, Cmdr. Woerner completed numerous fast-attack submarine deployments throughout the Pacific and Indian Oceans.

Woerner holds a Bachelor of Science (summa cum laude) in systems engineering from Washington University in St. Louis. He studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology earning a Master of Science in mechanical engineering, the degree of Naval Engineer, and a Doctor of Philosophy in autonomy and marine robotics (mechanical and oceanographic engineering) in the department of Mechanical Engineering and the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory.

    Manta Ray
    Unmanned undersea vehicles (UUVs) that operate for extended durations without the need for human-present logistic support or maintenance offer the potential for persistent operations in forward environments. Such systems could allow traditional host vessels increased freedom of operational flexibility while providing traditional servicing ports with relief of workload.

    DARPA collaborated with industry on stealth technology.
    DARPA’s Stealth Revolution
    In the early days of DARPA’s work on stealth technology, Have Blue, a prototype of what would become the F-117A, first flew successfully in 1977. The success of the F-117A program marked the beginning of the stealth revolution, which has had enormous benefits for national security.
