Biological Technologies Office

Col. Peter Attilio joined DARPA in November 2024 as a program manager in the Biological Technologies Office. His research focuses on molecular mechanisms of traumatic brain injury and sedation and analgesia in austere environments. 

A Colonel in the U.S. Army, Attilio most recently served as director of the U.S. Army Graduate Program in Anesthesia Nursing and was a clinical assistant professor at Baylor University. He also held several roles, including chief of the Department of Anesthesia and Operative Services, at Madigan Army Medical Center. Colonel Attilio continues to serve as the Consultant to the Army Surgeon General for Nursing Anesthesia. 

A decorated veteran, Attilio has received the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star Medal, and the Defense Meritorious Service Medal. He served in both Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and supported multiple Joint Task Forces in support of the Global War on Terror. He has published numerous peer-reviewed journal articles and facilitated international poster and podium presentations. 

Attilio earned a Bachelor of Science in nursing from the University of Delaware, a Master of Science in nursing anesthesia from the U.S. Army Graduate Program, and a Ph.D. in neuroscience from the Uniformed Services University. He is a board-certified nurse anesthetist and a member of the International Anesthesia Research Society, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Military Officers Association of America, and the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists.
