The goal of the Network Enabled by WDM Highly Integrated Photonics (NEW-HIP) program is to enable a high-performance single-mode-fiber-based optical network that is modular, scalable and robust so as to be universally applicable to any tactical and wide-bodied military aircraft, including future aircraft such as the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF), Advanced Hawkeye (E-2D), Multi-Mission Aircraft (MMA) P-8, F/A-18 and others. The NEW-HIP program has two principle thrusts: the design of a future-proof network architecture that supports both digital and analog signals using wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology; and the design, fabrication and testing of small, light-weight and highly integrated photonic and electronic circuit components.
