Team Grand Challenger, based in Houston Texas, is
continuing the proud tradition for exploration vessels,
vehicles and other craft bearing the "Challenger" name,
by christening their vehicle the "Challenger" and
entering it into the 2007 Urban Challenge for autonomous
vehicles. The test vehicle is a specially modified 1984
Jeep Cherokee designed for use on mountainous trails but
can equally be used on city roads. Challenger, along
with its advanced computers, has radar, camera and other
tracking and position sensors to keep the vehicle on
course as it navigates urban environment. Challenger is
one of the pioneering vehicles under construction that
will provide a platform to explore and advance the
effort to use computers and advanced sensors to remove
man from the mundane and life risking task of
transporting supplies in a war zone.
