Program Manager: Dr. Michael V. Callahan
The Stealthy Sensors Program seeks to capitalize on unique capabilities in animal endurance, mobility, and sensing for the protection of military personnel in high-threat environments. The program utilizes the natural ability of animal systems in training and learning to track, detect, and announce threats in both urban and rural environments. One effort harnesses the pigeon’s natural homing behavior to redirect trained birds to investigate a remotely located target. Other efforts utilize the incredibly sensitive olfactory abilities of dogs to detect covert and improvised explosives and perform unique ISR missions such as obtain audio and video in difficult and extreme environments.
