The Plasma Sterilization of Wounds and Medical Devices program is investigating the ability of a plasma or partially ionized gas to kill pathogenic bacteria on the surface of the skin, leading to improved wound healing and reduction of secondary infections. Preliminary research indicates that a nonthermal, atmospheric pressure plasma can drastically reduce a wide range of pathogenic bacteria placed on skin surrogates in controlled experiments. By investigating how these results translate to living skin, the program will build the foundation for a novel medical technology.
